 Veterans Affairs
VHCC’s Veterans Affairs Office coordinates all veterans’ educational benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the College.

The office is located on the Virginia Highlands Community College campus in ISC 131. The VA certifying official can be reached by phone at (276)739-2460.

The VA requires all students to be enrolled in an official curriculum leading to a certificate or degree in order to receive benefits. You must contact your VA certifying official each semester to complete the necessary forms to establish and maintain your eligibility for benefits.

The Department of Veterans Services State Approving Agency approves programs of education offered at Virginia Highlands Community College.

Veterans' Educational Benefits
Veterans of the United States military and their dependents may be eligible to receive educational benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This federal office determines eligibility, and when students qualify for more than one educational benefit, can assist students in determining how to maximize these benefits.

Veterans who qualify for more than one educational benefit should research the various options under both benefits before applying. For example, once a veteran has applied for certification under the Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) the veteran will not be able to switch to the Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30) benefits.

On the VHCC campus, a Veterans Officer works closely with students to certify enrollment each semester and assists students in applying for educational benefits. Please contact Deborah Barrett located in the Admissions Office (Room ISC 133) or (276)739-2460 for additional information and assistance.

Veterans must request VA certification each semester (including summer sessions). Once you have enrolled in your classes, submit a Certification Request for VA Educational Benefits form to the VHCC Veterans Officer who will certify your enrollment with the regional Veterans Administration Office for processing. This process usually takes the regional office approximately 30 days; however, during peak periods, processing can take up to ten weeks. Therefore, it is extremely important to enroll in classes and submit the “Certification Request for VA Educational Benefits” as soon as possible each semester.

Each semester beginning and ending dates of veterans’ classes are required for certification. If a class does not last the entire semester, it may affect your payment. For example, if you want to be fulltime, you must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours not including any classes that begin later in the semester or end earlier than the last day of the semester.

All veterans programs at Virginia Highlands Community College are approved for enrollment of veterans, survivors, and dependents under Title 38, U.S.C. and selected reservists under Title 10, U.S.C.

Prior active military members have a ten year period of eligibility following their discharge from active duty, or a fifteen year period if receiving Post 9/11 benefits. Dependent children of 100% permanent disabled service connected veterans have until their 26th birthday to complete their education, while wives/widows have a ten year period. If you may be eligible for educational benefits under Chapter 31 (VOCREHAB), call (800)827-1000. Members of the Selected Reserve and National Guard, who have entered into a six year contract, may be eligible under Chapter 10606 (nee 106).

If you are not sure you qualify for veteran’s educational benefits, please call the VA toll-free number at 888-442-4551. If you qualify for more than one veteran’s educational benefit, check with the VA office to explore your options for maximum use.

Replacing a DD-214
A request form is available online at for those interested in obtaining a copy of their DD-214. It may take approximately three weeks to process requests.

The VHCC Veterans Officer must submit a letter verifying full-time enrollment (enrolled in at least 12 credits for the semester) before CHAMPVA benefits will be extended to students between the ages of 18 and 23. To request this letter, contact the VHCC Veterans Officer each semester.
